At Tuks FM, we’re passionate about shaping the next generation of broadcasters. Our Bi-annual Training Day, held on 27 September 2025, brought together industry experts, alumni, and our dedicated volunteers for a day of learning, inspiration, and connection. The event gave our volunteers the opportunity to engage with some of the best in the industry and gain valuable insights into the world of radio and media.

The event featured an impressive line-up of guest speakers who shared insights into the ever-evolving media landscape and offered guidance to Tuks FM’s next generation of radio talent. Among the speakers were Nicole da Silva, Station Manager at Tuks FM, Given Baloyi from Metro FM, and Professor Mosia, the Vice-Principal for Student Life at the University of Pretoria. Renowned radio consultant and Tuks FM alumnus Tim Zunckel delivered an insightful session on the skill of storytelling, exploring how mastering narrative can elevate any broadcaster’s craft.

The highlight of the day was the spotlight session by Ayanda MVP, celebrated broadcaster and proud Tuks FM alumna. Ayanda’s radio journey began at Tuks FM, where she honed her voice and developed her passion for connecting with listeners. Since her campus radio days, she has built an illustrious career in South African broadcasting, hosting major shows on 947 and YFM, where she currently serves as the Drive Time Host. Her story served as a powerful reminder of how Tuks FM continues to shape future industry leaders.

After the main programme, volunteers broke away into their respective departments for interactive and practical sessions led by experienced professionals and alumni. Each group had the opportunity to learn directly from industry experts:

  • Presenters: DJ Ankletap (Jacaranda FM)
  • News: Nokwazi Qumbisa (YFM news reader)
  • Music: Keneilwe Mohapi (Primedia Head of Music)
  • Production: Katlego Mahlake (Primedia Audio Supervisor)
  • Sports: Duran Collett (former 5FM Sports Presenter)
  • Marketing: Lebang Kgosana (Agency Owner and Former Presenter)

These sessions offered hands-on advice, mentorship, and inspiration – empowering Tuks FM volunteers to grow within their roles and build on the station’s strong legacy of excellence.

The Training Day reaffirmed Tuks FM’s commitment to nurturing young media talent and maintaining its reputation as one of South Africa’s leading campus radio stations. As the station continues to evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower students with the skills, creativity, and confidence needed to thrive in the broadcasting industry.
